PEMS Web - a simulation environment for the environment
What if you could predict the environmental implications of your everyday activities, of the products or technologies that you use or consider buying, or of the policy decisions in your community? Wouldn't that give you a better perspective on what you can do to help save the environment?
Computer-based models and simulations can provide you such predictive capabilities.
A gateway to environmental models
Here at PEMS Web, you can find many models shared by environmental experts and enthusiasts from around the world that can help answer your what-if questions. Simply run the models through their user-interface web pages right from your computer -- no downloading or extra software required.
A virtual design space for creating your own simulations
Sometimes you may find that the individual models shared by others can answer only parts of your what-if questions, but if you can connect multiple models together, you would be able to tailor a new simulation that works better for your application, PEMS Web can help you with that! Any models that you find in PEMS Web can be integrated to form a new simulation. You only need to specify which parameters of different models should be connected, the rest (direction of information flow, order of executions, and the other mathematical/computational matters) will be automatically taken care of for you.
A model sharing space
PEMS Web also helps you share your model, whether it's your original model or a simulation you've created by synthesizing others' models. You can choose to share only the computational capability of your model, so that others can only use your model but cannot possess or look inside it, or you can share the entire model in an open-source fashion, allowing others to see how your model works and potentially help improve or build upon it. Either way, your shared model will be able to help others answer their environmental what-if questions.
An interactive environmental discussion space
In PEMS Web forums, you can connect with other users and discuss environmental issues of interest. Unlike other environmental forums, however, PEMS Web forums also allow you to directly link your message to any models or simulations. Thus, in addition to reading about what you've discovered in your message, other users can also run the models that you've used and interactively experience your discoveries.
